DEAD RINGER

A full story gig for Cyberpunk 2077: a new side quest from Wakako Okada, in your journal and on your map, with a payout that depends on how you run it. Free on Nexus Mods.

THE JOB // SPOILER-SAFE

THE STORY

>> IN NIGHT CITY, A VOICE CAN OPEN DOORS. OR FLATLINE YOU_

Somebody is issuing kill orders in Wakako Okada's name. Her tag, her wording, and the money really clears. People under her protection are dying on contracts she never approved.

Wakako texts you, you call her back, and from there it runs through a merc outside Afterlife, a netrunner in Kabuki, and a hardline in the back of her own pachinko parlor. Johnny is around for most of it.

A real gig

Journal entry, tracked objectives, working map pins that route you there, the gig icon on the map, a payout at the end. It behaves like a vanilla gig because it is built out of the same parts.

Fully voiced, with lip sync

Sixteen conversations, every line subtitled, every mouth moving. Wakako, V, Johnny and Yoko speak in the game's own recordings, in whatever language your game runs in. Char and the merc are new, so voice actors play them: Sarah Fish and fronterawave. No audio mod needed and none used.

Wakako Okada, in the room

She hires you by text and by video call, and later you go up to her office and talk it out face to face.

Break into the parlor's network

A hardline access point on the wall at the back of the pachinko parlor. You jack in and play breach protocol, the game's own code grid, to get the next clue.

Quiet or loud, and it shows

Get in and out of a Japantown stairwell without a Tyger Claw seeing you and Wakako makes one call. Get spotted, even on the way out, and she makes a colder one. The area to clear is drawn on your minimap, the way vanilla gigs draw theirs.

One choice you have to live with

Halfway through, someone on their knees hands you the proof. Flatline them, or let them run. Wakako pays either way, but pays differently.

Starts on its own

No console commands, no dialogue option to trigger it. Get past the prologue and your phone buzzes. It's Wakako.

Drops into your save

Install mid-playthrough and the gig arms itself the next time you load. Nothing to configure, no in-game setup.

CAST: WAKAKO · V · JOHNNY · YOKO: THE GAME'S OWN RECORDINGS // CHAR: SARAH FISH // THE MERC: FRONTERAWAVE

Every word Wakako, V, Johnny and Yoko say in this gig is a voice line from Cyberpunk 2077 itself, whole or cut short at a pause, picked to fit the moment. Nobody imitates them. No new recordings for them, no new lines.

That decided how the gig was written, and it is why it doesn't follow the comic exactly. If nobody ever recorded Wakako saying a thing, Wakako can't say it. So some lines changed, and part of the plot arrives as a text message or a line in your journal instead of being said out loud. Worth it.

Char and the merc are new characters, so real people had to record them. Since 1.1.0 those people are voice actors: Char is played by Sarah Fish, the merc by fronterawave, who also recorded for Negative Balance. Before that, both were my own voice with the pitch shifted around until they stopped sounding like one gonk at a laptop. It got the gig out the door. Every line in the gig is subtitled.

LANGUAGES // TRANSLATABLE SINCE 1.2.0

Play the game in any of its languages and Wakako, V, Johnny and Yoko follow, voice and subtitles both. Their lines are the game's own, and the game already ships them translated. Char and the merc stay English, and so do the texts: the journal, the messages, the shard, the camera log.

Those are yours to translate. A translation is a small mod of its own, and the kit is a WolvenKit project with every string in it: open it, type over the English, set your language code, install, test, zip. Nothing to build. If you're a voice actor, Char and the merc can be recorded in your language too. Upload it on Nexus Mods as a translation of the gig.

THE TRANSLATION KIT[ZIP]

SOURCE SHARD // THE COMIC

Dead Ringer was a comic before it was a mod. The comic is an in-game screenshot comic by nightcityriot; the gig puts you inside it. Where the two differ it is on purpose: the hit is quiet here where the comic has V rush the street, and the parlor is a breach where the comic has a search.

INSTALL // NOTHING TO CONFIGURE

HOW TO INSTALL

REQUIRES: RED4ext · ArchiveXL 1.22+ · TweakXL · Codeware · redscript · NO CET, NO AUDIOWARE, NO MOD_SETTINGS · ALL STANDARD, YOU PROBABLY HAVE THEM ALREADY

With a mod manager

Download and install as normal. That's it.

Manually

Extract the zip into your Cyberpunk 2077 folder, keeping the folder structure. The archive and r6 folders go next to Cyberpunk2077.exe.

Then what?

Nothing to configure, no in-game setup. It works on an existing save; install mid-playthrough and the gig arms itself the next time you load. Get past the prologue and your phone buzzes.

Is there a story requirement?

No. It waits for the same flag every one of the game's own side jobs waits for, which is the end of the prologue, and it won't start once you're into the endgame. Everywhere it sends you is open from the start, so there is nothing else to finish first.

Is it in my language?

Wakako, V, Johnny and Yoko are, automatically: voice and subtitles, in whatever language your game runs in. Char, the merc and the texts stay English until someone makes a translation mod. See Languages if that someone is you.

Do I need the other gigs?

No. Negative Balance and Acceptable Loss are separate stories and none of the three needs the others. They can be installed together.

SEE IT RUN

The whole gig start to finish, in one sitting. It gives away everything: the route, who is behind it, how it ends. This run goes out silent, which is one of the two ways it can end. If you'd rather play it first, the download is right above. Nothing loads from YouTube until you press play.

GOOD TO KNOW // TWO THINGS IT CHANGES
An access point appears on the pachinko parlor's wall, and stays

It is the box the gig sends you to breach. It is part of the mod, so it sits on that wall even outside the gig. You can jack into it outside the gig and it pays the usual datamine rewards.

The netrunner chair at the Dewdrop Inn loses its regular occupant

The game parks an ambient NPC in that chair, a different one every load, and the gig puts a character there instead. Rather than have two people in one seat, the mod removes the spot. Uninstall it and the chair goes back to normal.

PATCH LOG // CURRENT BUILD V1.2.0

CHANGELOG

V1.2.0 [OK] SUPPORT FOR TRANSLATIONS:
  · WAKAKO, V, JOHNNY AND YOKO ARE NOW AUTOMATICALLY TRANSLATED IN YOUR LANGUAGE, VOICE AND SUBTITLES. THEIR LINES ARE THE GAME'S OWN, WHICH THE GAME ALREADY SHIPS TRANSLATED.
  · CHAR AND THE MERC STAY ENGLISH. TEXTS (JOURNAL, MESSAGES, SHARD, CAMERA LOG) STAY ENGLISH UNTIL SOMEONE MAKES A TRANSLATION MOD.
  · A TRANSLATION KIT WITH ALL THE REQUIRED FILES, FOR TRANSLATORS TO MAKE THEIR OWN TRANSLATION MOD.
V1.1.0 [OK] CHAR AND THE MERC ARE PLAYED BY VOICE ACTORS:
  · CHAR IS PLAYED BY SARAH FISH, THE MERC BY FRONTERAWAVE.
  · THE MERC SAYS MORE. A "POW!" IN HIS BRAG OUTSIDE AFTERLIFE, A GRUNT AS HE GOES DOWN, AND "LOOK FOR YOURSELF" WHEN HE HANDS OVER THE PROOF.
  · TWO OF THE MERC'S SUBTITLES FOLLOW HIS NEW RECORDING, WHICH REWORDS THEM.
  · YOKO AND WAKAKO LOOK AT YOUR FACE WHILE THEY SPEAK, NOT AT THE FLOOR.
V1.0.6 [OK] CRASH OUTSIDE AFTERLIFE WHEN PLAYING WITH COMPANION MODS FIXED. A POLICE CAR AROUND THE LOCATION COULD DO THE SAME. REPORTED BY RENDERMAN11.
V1.0.5 [OK] TOJI FIXES:
  · KILLING HIM FROM A ROOF, FROM THE STREET ABOVE HIM OR WITH A QUICKHACK FROM RANGE COULD LEAVE THE OBJECTIVE ON "KILL TOJI" FOR GOOD. RELOADING DID NOT CLEAR IT. REPORTED BY HARDYPILGRIM, LOSTACC21 AND 3DTREES.
  · LOADING A SAVE MADE AFTER HIS DEATH LEFT THE GIG UNABLE TO FINISH. IT SAT ON "LEAVE THE AREA" HOWEVER FAR YOU WALKED.
V1.0.4 [OK] THE ACCESS POINT ON THE PACHINKO PARLOR WALL ASKED FOR INTELLIGENCE 10. IT ASKS FOR 3 NOW, WHICH EVERY CHARACTER HAS FROM THE START. REPORTED BY JRAINOR, LMPREZZION AND MERCCOMMANDER1.
V1.0.3 [OK] SUGGESTED BY 1RUGGEDGAMER:
  · SOMEWHERE TO WAIT OUT BOTH OF CHAR'S WAITS. A RAILING OUTSIDE YOKO'S STALL AND A CHAIR OUTSIDE THE PACHINKO PARLOR, MARKED ON YOUR MAP AS WAITING SPOT. LEAN OR SIT AND THE TIME PASSES.
  · WAKAKO PAYS MORE. 15,000 EDDIES AT THE TOP INSTEAD OF 9,300, AND THE OTHER THREE ENDINGS SCALE WITH IT.
V1.0.2 [OK] THE MERC OUTSIDE AFTERLIFE:
  · HE COULD BECOME IMPOSSIBLE TO ATTACK, TURNING BACK INTO A BYSTANDER THREE MINUTES AFTER THE GIG ASKED YOU TO TAKE HIM OUT. REPORTED BY BRAHMANAX AND SATURNFCB.
  · HE COULD ALSO DROP TO THE GROUND, OR STOP BEING A TARGET, THE MOMENT THE ORDER WAS GIVEN. STRUCK AT RANDOM, AND A RELOAD DID NOT CLEAR IT.
V1.0.1 [OK] VIDEO CALLS AND EYELINES:
  · VIDEO CALLS COULD CONNECT TO AN EMPTY FRAME, WITH NOBODY IN IT, WHENEVER THE HOLOCALL STUDIO HAD NOT BEEN USED YET ON THAT SAVE.
  · PEOPLE ON A VIDEO CALL NOW SIT FACING YOU AND HOLD YOUR EYE. WAKAKO AND CHAR STOOD SIDE-ON, BARELY LIT, LOOKING PAST YOU. REPORTED BY PORKHAMMER.
  · WAKAKO, CHAR AND YOKO LOOK AT YOU WHEN THEY TALK TO YOU IN PERSON.
  · CHAR'S VIDEO CALL IS FRAMED DIFFERENTLY FROM WAKAKO'S, INSTEAD OF THE SAME CHAIR AND THE SAME POSE.
  · THE TYGER CLAWS AND TOJI NO LONGER VANISH IN FRONT OF YOU WHEN THE GIG ENDS. THEY ARE REMOVED ONCE YOU ARE CLEAR OF THE STAIRCASE. REPORTED BY PORKHAMMER.
V1.0.0 [OK] DEAD RINGER, A FULL SIDE GIG. TESTED ON 2.31 + PHANTOM LIBERTY:
  · SOMEBODY IS ISSUING KILL ORDERS IN WAKAKO OKADA'S NAME. FIVE PLACES, SIXTEEN CONVERSATIONS, TWO ENDINGS.
  · EVERY LINE IS SPOKEN AND SUBTITLED. WAKAKO, V, JOHNNY AND YOKO USE THE GAME'S OWN VOICE LINES. CHAR AND THE MERC ARE NEW CHARACTERS, SO REAL PEOPLE RECORDED THEM.
  · A BREACH ON THE PACHINKO PARLOR'S WALL. THE GAME'S OWN CODE GRID, ON AN ACCESS POINT THE MOD SHIPS.
  · THE AREA YOU HAVE TO LEAVE IS DRAWN ON THE MINIMAP, THE WAY THE GAME DRAWS ITS OWN.
  · FOUR PAYOUTS, BY WHAT THE MERC GOT AND BY WHETHER YOU WERE SEEN.

There are two more gigs, and the tools that built all three are open. Two things in Dead Ringer took a while to work out, the shippable access point and the quest area drawn on the minimap, and both are written down on the build page.
